How about creating a virtual warehouse called “Returnable Materials” and making a Stock Entry purpose Matetrial Transfer and dropiing those items from a Company Warehouse into the Returnable Materials warehouse. The Print format for Stcok Entry can call it anything you want. A custom field at the Stock Entry Detail level can also record the Item Cost that needs to be displayed in the Prnt Formation.

Now a Stock Balance report of the Returnable Maerials warehouse will give you the list of items that have gone out and not come back.

When the items do come back, Take the original Stock Entry Purpose Material Transfer, duplicate it, interchange the Source and Target warehouse and boom, your items are back.

For non-returnable items, just do a Stock Entry Purpose Material Issue, have a custom field to capture purpose and boom the material gets flushed out of your stocks.

Making customizations for this is an overkill in my opinion.
