I have erpnext version 10 installed, but I want to enter documents and transactions for 2017 with dates of 2017 in Fiscal Year 2017. I tried to enter documents dated 2017 and I get an error message. Is there a restriction on the system to enter documents (request for materials, quotation, purchase order, invoice, etc.) with an earlier date?

Firstly, ensure that you have created Fiscal Year for last year. Because date selected in the transaction has to fall under some Fiscal Year.
Accounts > Fiscal Year > New
In the transaction, you can edit Posting Date and Time by checking on the “Edit Posting Date and Time” field (below Posting Date and Time) fields itself.
