Item code modification

I decided to use a 12 digit Item code instead of 5 digit code with which I started. I downloaded the Item file, change the code and imported with the "Overwriting" window checked.
When I downloaded the item file again it contain one set of items with new code and and also another set of items with old code. I tried it without checking the "Overwriting" window as well, but got the same result.
Please let me know the best way to change the item codes. I have already 700 items.

Use Rename Tool. It lies in Setup > Rename Tool.
