How to add pictures or thumbnails to the blog list

hi,

the blog list format is now text only, and a bit dull.
how can we add thumbnails (at the side), and or pictures (in the body) in this blog list?

If I want to change something, (template, js, css) where can i do that (without being overwritten by updates?
can i use bootstrap code out of the box?

I am confused by the website theme settings:

a. for the right box: what is the difference between ‘link to bootstrap css’, and ‘link to your bootstrap theme’?
b. where should we save the bootstrap css?
c.for the box below ’ style using css’, what should come here?

Do you have examples for this?
