ERPNext had released it’s most awaited update i.e. v9.0.0. This version has lots of new features and fixes and that’s all we’re waiting for. You hadn’t missed anything. This is just software development lifecycle and will be managed by version control & continue to use now as v9.x.x instead of v8.x.x.
