According to the manual:

Difference between a customer name and a contact name

A customer name is the name of the organisation and a contact name is the name of the user who is operating the ERPNext system.

For Example: If American Power Mills is an organisation name and their founder Shiv Agarwal has installed ERPNext on his system. Then,

Customer Name: American Power Mills

Contact Name: Shiv Agarwal

Well in my case, most of the customers are individual, only a few are corporate customers. How to solve this?

Create Customer itself.
Customer Name : Shiva Agarwal Proprietor.
Select Customer Group: Individual or create appropriate group.

If you interact with any assistant or contact you wish to link under Shiva Agarwal Proprietor you can add Contact Name
