Have you defined a company??
Possibly the field is mandatory and you saving it empty. Is it hidden field? Make is visible and ensure company value is entered and is not empty.
What Item you create will depend on the context - it can be either a service, asset or a stock item, so you will need to recognize that to distinguish between these three.
