Adding a custom "Get Items" button on customised doc

I have created a custom doc and I need to get items from salesorder to this custom doc type.I am not able to do it.Kindly suggest how can the functionality be achieved?

Would there be an elaborate explanation on what parts are done and why. It will help to increase lots of custom doctypes that are required in maintenance business.
